Sir:-

I am directed by the Marquess of Lansdowne to transmit to you, to be laid before Mr. Secretary Lyttelton, a copy of a letter from His Majesty's Customs, with respect to the sale in Japan of the Steamship "Mascotte" of Sunderland, which left that port on the 18th ultimo in ballast for Hongkong.

In my letter of the 2nd instant relative to the sale of the Steamship "Ohio" to Mr. Bardens, it was suggested that Mr. Lyttelton might think it desirable that the Governor of Hongkong should be informed of the circumstances in order that a watch might be kept upon the vessel's movements; and I am to suggest that the same course might be followed in the present case with regard to the Mascotte*.

I am,

Sir,

Your most obedient,

humble Servant,

H. Campbell,

Under Secretary of State,

Colonial Office.
